What is eDPI? The Complete Guide
Your mouse DPI alone tells you little about your actual in-game sensitivity. The number that controls how fast your crosshair moves is your eDPI — Effective DPI. It is the single most important sensitivity metric for competitive gaming.
The formula: eDPI = Mouse DPI × In-Game Sensitivity. Example: 800 DPI × 0.5 sensitivity = 400 eDPI — the same as 400 DPI × 1.0 sensitivity.
Why eDPI Matters More Than DPI Alone
Two players with completely different DPI settings can have identical aim behavior if their eDPI matches. A player at 400 DPI with 1.0 sensitivity moves their crosshair exactly the same as a player at 800 DPI with 0.5 sensitivity — both have 400 eDPI. eDPI is the universal sensitivity language of competitive gaming.
What eDPI Range Should You Use?
For FPS games (CS2, Valorant, Rainbow Six), the professional sweet spot is 200–800 eDPI. For action-focused games (Apex, Fortnite), 800–1800 eDPI is common. For MOBAs and strategy games, higher eDPI (1200–3000) helps navigate maps faster.
Pro tip: Once you find your ideal eDPI, change your DPI hardware without disrupting muscle memory — just adjust in-game sensitivity proportionally to keep the same eDPI value.
Frequently Asked Questions
For CS2 and Valorant, most pros use 200–800 eDPI. The average among top CS2 pros is around 800 eDPI, while Valorant pros tend to go even lower (200–500). Starting at 400–600 eDPI is a solid baseline for new competitive players.
No. Sensitivity is your raw in-game number. eDPI multiplies hardware DPI by that in-game number. Two players with different DPI can have identical aim if their eDPI matches. eDPI is the universal comparison metric.
Use a native DPI step from your sensor (400, 800, 1600 are most common) and adjust in-game sensitivity to reach your target eDPI. Native steps give cleaner tracking. Keep DPI stable and fine-tune with in-game sensitivity only.
Each game applies sensitivity differently — some linear, some with a curve. FOV also affects feel. Use our Sensitivity Converter to maintain consistent cm/360 across all games.
TenZ plays Valorant at 800 DPI × 0.35 sensitivity = 280 eDPI. Very low even by pro standards. See our Pro Player DPI Database for full up-to-date settings.
